Picture this: There you are lying in bed, just about to doze off and then… “ca-ching!” Your phone dings alerting you that someone just purchased from your website. You rub your eyes just to make sure you aren’t making things up and then again, “ca-ching,” it happens again! You just sold two digital products and you were lying in bed! You roll over with a huge smile on your face as you drift off to sleep. You thought it was hard to make money in your sleep and there you are doing it. When you wake up the next morning, you wake up to five more notifications. You check your mailing list and see that those sales came from the sales funnel you started two weeks ago!
So, is it true? Can you really make money in your sleep?
A simple question like this should have a simple answer, right? Well, I’m so glad you are interested in learning the answer. First, allow me a moment to quickly break down what “making money in your sleep” means as related to you and your business.
You may have heard the term “passive income” a lot lately. And someone may have told you that passive income is making money and not having to work for it. Girl, they lied to ya! Well, that’s only half the story. By creating passive income, you are making money in a way that doesn’t require you to consistently give up your time. Passive income allows you to make money time and time again without having to start from scratch and put in extra hours for product maintenance. Passive income is being able to sell one product to five people easily or 5,000 people using the same method. Passive income saves you time and money and makes way for you to find extra time and make extra money on a consistent basis. Time is the most precious resource you have, so you have to be creative and find ways to maximize it.
I have been a full-time business owner for over fifteen years now and trust me when I say that not having the cushion of a steady paycheck makes things a tad bit more real. My time in Corporate America showed me all the limitless possibilities that focusing on my own vision could offer me. Not only have I been able to live a life that fulfills me, but I use my knowledge and skills to help others scale their businesses using digital tools.
So answer these questions:

It’s one thing to be exhausted every day from running in the rat race of making enough money just to be broke. It’s another story to be exhausted from doing meaningful work that allows you to reclaim your time (in my Maxine Waters voice*). When you take the time to serve your audience with what they want in the way that they want it, it can be a game changing move for your business. Here are three ways you can create passive income in your business and potentially make money while you sleep.
- Consider digital products. These products can be online classes or trainings, e-books, templates that aid in tracking and productivity, or workbooks that help guide one through processes. On the front end, you put in the time equity to develop your idea (your offering/what you desire to teach), decide the way in which you’ll deliver it (e-book, class, recording, etc.), and then you do the work to create the product. On the back end, once the product is completed, you create a system that helps sell your product without you having to be present to make the deal. What you create can be marketed and sold to your target audience at any time and on any day, thus coining the phrase “make money while you sleep.”
- Now, let’s circle back to the products you can create to help you build that “sleep money” foundation. Not only are digital products great means of passive income for you, but using your network to sell someone else’s products is also a means to earn money. This is called affiliate income. You promote someone else’s products and make a commission on what is sold. The rule of thumb here is only to be an affiliate of products that you fully believe in and that you can trust the validity of the product being sold.
- Lastly, delegating and hiring help is one of the most commonly overlooked ways of creating passive income. When you hire someone to take certain tasks off your plate, you free up your time to do more of the things that can increase your bottom line. Spreading mundane or super-strenuous tasks to outsourced contractors allows you to put your focus into spreading the word about your remarkable offerings. Your work is remarkable, right? I thought so.
Outsourcing tasks doesn’t mean you can’t still be a superwoman, it just means that you have enough sense to tag in help so that you can fly higher than you ever have before.
Burn out is real and if you are not careful, you’ll find yourself experiencing it sooner rather than later. Passive income helps you come out of “work mode” 24/7 and step into “create mode.” You need time to focus your energies on doing better, being better and offering better to your clients.
