Why are you on Twitter?
Twitter is a great tool to build connections with like-minded and relevant people from all over the world who are share information on topics related to your business or interests. In order to get the most out of Twitter – consider doing the following …
- Make your profile public. The whole purpose is to connect with people, right. Don’t set your account to private as it will deter people from following you. If you are maintaining a professional images on your business Twitter account there is no need for hiding behind a curtain.
- Use your branded name. Setup your Twitter name either as your full name or your business name. You want to make sure people that are already familiar with you are able to easily find you on Twitter. Keep your branded name consistent across all your online marketing platforms.
- Set your location. Fill in your real location. This allows you to connect and network in person with others in your area.
- Include Your Bio. Write your 160 character bio so that it highlights professional position and also displays a bit of your personality.
- Choose an avatar. Select a photo that is more face than anything else, especially if you are using your name for your profile. A genuine face shot allows viewers to connect with you on a more personal level.
- Choose your URL wisely. If you have multiple websites or multiple online platforms choose the one you are most active on and that reflects the message you want to convey.
- Selectively follow others. Follow people that are relevant to your business or have related interests and share information that you want. Twitter is an excellent list building tool and you want to ensure you are building a high quality list.
- Don’t just follow back. It is not a requirement within Twitter that you follow everyone that follows you. If they are not in alignment with your focus, “Don’t Follow Back”!
- Pay attention to others’ tweets. You would be amazed at how much you can learn just by “listening.” If you consistently follow someone that provides valuable information, send them an “@” message to let them know you are listening.
- Retweet. If you read something that resonates with you or you think others would appreciate, retweet (RT) it. Whenever possible, add a comment that explains why you like it.
There you have it. Twitter is a great way to gain brand exposure, but only if you work it. What do you think? Was this helpful in planning your Social Media Strategy for Twitter?
